Along Napoleon’s Route to the Verdon Gorge

The Soul of Provence between Scents and Light

Full day · 9.5 hours

Itinerary

Grasse

Grasse, the world’s perfume capital, reveals at dawn its medieval historic center, with winding lanes and an authentic, time-worn charm. Before the boutiques open, you experience a rare and privileged atmosphere, where ancient stone walls still whisper the coolness of the night. The town then unveils its purest essence – delicate, refined, and utterly incomparable.

Fragonard Historical Museum – Grasse

Discover the prestigious Fragonard House, an emblematic institution of Grasse and a major figure in French perfumery. A captivating guided tour immerses you in the art, history and fragrances that shape its heritage.  To mark 100 years of passion for perfume, Happy French Riviera reserves a privileged attention on Fragonard creations for its travelers, during their visit of the House.

Route Napoléon

Follow the legendary Route Napoleon, travelled by Napoleon himself in March 1815. Between sunlit peaks and untouched landscapes, this historic road immerses you fully in the spirit of History and wide-open horizons.

Castellane

Castellane, a historic village of the Verdon, was one of Napoleon’s stops on March 2nd, 1815, during his return to Paris. Crowned by its iconic rocky peak, the village blends centuries-old heritage, striking cliffs, and wild nature, offering a powerful first immersion into the spirit of the Verdon.

Verdon Gorge Scenic Route

Then comes the true Verdon Gorge Road – long, majestic, and known only to the locals who genuinely take it. For nearly two hours, you follow towering cliffs and breathtaking vistas that reveal the deepest gorges in Europe, punctuated by carefully selected stops offering the finest viewpoints. A striking journey where the power of nature unfolds at every turn, elevated by a heightened perspective for a fully immersive experience.

Lavender escape

In season, enjoy an exclusive escape onto the plateau, where the lavender fields reveal their most vivid colors. Enchanting scents, endless violet lines, and a serene sense of harmony create a suspended moment that leaves a lasting impression.

Moustiers-Sainte-Marie

Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, ranked among the most beautiful villages in France, rises like a mineral jewel set against the cliffs. Its terraced lanes, artisan workshops and luminous atmosphere create a stop of rare beauty – both gentle and spectacular.

Lake Sainte-Croix

At Lake Sainte-Croix, the Verdon’s turquoise waters unfold like a luminous mirror shimmering with emerald reflections. When conditions allow, a peaceful pedal boat escape leads you to the entrance of the gorges–towering cliffs, the Saint-Maurin waterfall, and a gentle, deeply sensory immersion. And for those tempted, a refreshing swim in these crystal-clear waters adds the perfect finishing touch to this exceptional moment.

The Return

On the way back, a scenic country road guides you from the landscapes of Upper Provence toward the gentle charm of Lower Provence. At times, around a quiet bend, a suspended moment may appear: the passing of a flock, a living and authentic scene offering a simple, genuine breath of rural life – a graceful nod to the soul of the region. After this peaceful interlude through hills, villages, and open plains, the motorway takes over for a smooth return to the Côte d'Azur.
